How the units convert
Quotes come in three different units and the difference is not small. Black Hills Energy bills Wyoming in therms, suppliers quote in therms, and the EIA publishes in Mcf. One Mcf is 10 Ccf or 1,000 cubic feet, and works out to 10.37 therms. One Ccf is 100 cubic feet, about 1.037 therms. One therm is 100,000 Btu.
Two caveats worth knowing. Ccf to Mcf is pure volume and exact; the therm conversion depends on heat content, and Black Hills Energy applies its own BTU factor that shifts month to month, so your bill will land near these figures rather than exactly on them. And the residential number runs high in low-usage months because fixed customer charges spread across fewer units, which is why a summer residential figure is a poor read on what gas costs.

What this means for you. Commercial gas averaged $8.98/Mcf across 2025, down 1.7 percent from $9.13 in 2024 and well off the $12.14 peak in 2022. Three straight years of easing is exactly the market where a multi-year fixed offer looks best, and in Wyoming a multi-year term is only available from a supplier, never from the utility rate.
Read the official figure honestly. The EIA's Wyoming commercial price covered about 46.1 percent of commercial deliveries in May 2026, and roughly 55 percent in the surrounding months, because Choice Gas customers buy from third-party suppliers whose prices are not all captured. Treat it as a solid market benchmark, not a census of what every Wyoming business pays.

Wyoming gives a business a genuine choice rather than a forced one. Three of these come from independent suppliers and the fourth is Black Hills Energy's own regulated rate. Pick the structure that matches how you budget first, then compare prices inside it. Comparing a fixed quote against an index quote tells you almost nothing.

The GCA rate is a real option, and it has one hard limit. Black Hills Energy sells the commodity to Choice Gas customers under its regulated Gas Cost Adjustment rate and earns no profit on it, so staying put is a legitimate choice rather than a penalty. But the GCA moves with the market and cannot be taken on a multi-year term. If you want a price held past this program year, you have to go to a supplier. That is the single most useful thing for a Wyoming business to understand about this program.
A real Wyoming number to measure against. The University of Wyoming negotiated a fixed rate of $0.388 per therm for its employees and retirees in the Casper Division, running June 1, 2026 through May 31, 2028. It is a residential rate and not an offer to businesses, but it is a real two-year Wyoming number to measure a quote against.

Late March: your selection form arrives
Black Hills Energy mails a Choice Gas selection form with your control number, the participating suppliers and their price options. That control number is what you need to enroll, so do not bin it with the junk mail. No form? Call 877-245-3506.

April 2: the window opens and the phone starts ringing
Suppliers may only market once the window opens, and Black Hills Energy hands them the phone number and email on your utility account. Expect all ten of them at once. Offers land together and expire together.

Compare on price, term and structure
Get each quote in dollars per therm and check whether it is fixed, index or blended. Ask when the confirmation code expires: they are time-sensitive, and a lapsed code can mean you do not get the price you agreed.

Enroll online at choicegas.com, through your chosen supplier, by phone at 888-890-5554, or by mail to Choice Gas Program, P.O. Box 1158, Rapid City, SD 57709. Never mail the form to your supplier; it goes to the program address.

June 1: your price starts
The program year runs June 1 through May 31. Whatever you settled in April applies to every therm you burn through the following May, including next winter.
Rollover is not the same as keeping your price. If you do nothing, you stay with your current supplier and your current price option, which sounds harmless. The catch is the number: your new commodity price is set by your existing supplier fifteen days after the selection period ends. You are accepting a rate you have not seen, set after you lost the ability to shop it. Nothing about that is improper, and it is still a poor way to buy a year of gas.

Black Hills Energy Services is not your utility. A legally separate company from the regulated utility, even though the two share a parent. It competes for your business like any other supplier. You get identical delivery service whichever supplier you pick, so treat it as one of ten options rather than the safe default.

If Black Hills Wyoming Gas, LLC delivers your gas and your town is on the Choice Gas participating list, yes. The program covers both residential and commercial accounts, with no minimum volume threshold to clear, which is unusually open compared with most states.
Check the division, not the map in your head. Black Hills splits Wyoming into divisions and publishes participating towns by division. The boundaries are not intuitive: the Casper Division covers Casper and Laramie but not Cheyenne or Torrington. Check the town list before assuming.
