If you currently have your your local utility as your generation supplier or your contract with your current retail supplier is ending soon, then switching suppliers is fast and easy. All you have to do is shop for a new supplier. When you've decided to select one, sign up with them. They'll take care of the switching process from there. Your new service will usually begin at the start of the next billing cycle.

How Do I Switch From My Current Electric Supplier?

If you're thinking about dropping your current provider and switching right away -- don't do it until you've double-checked a few things...

First, some retail electricity suppliers will charge you an early termination fee if you choose to cancel your contract early. If you trying to cancel an existing contract, be sure to read through your supplier's contract/terms of service to see if your current plan includes early cancellation fees. Cancellation fees can run as high as $250 or even higher so you really want to be sure one way or the other.

If your current plan does include an early cancellation fee, then you'll want weigh that cost and amount of time left in your contract with how much you might save by switching to a new supplier.

Second, don't just jump at the first cheap electricity rate you see. Take some time to shop carefully. Be sure to consider these questions when evaluating a retail supplier:

  • Are their rates competitive? Check their rate history to see how they compare with other suppliers and your your local utility.
  • What do reviews say about their customer service? Are they there ready to help or do they keep you on hold?
  • How long have they been in business? How financially stable are they? What does their track record say about them?
