What Is the Price of Natural Gas in Florida?
The average price of natural gas for commercial customers in Florida is $1.25 per therm, or $1.29 per Ccf and $12.92 per Mcf, as of December 2025. Therms are the unit Florida gas utilities bill in, so that is the figure to check against your own statement. Florida runs 18.0 percent above the U.S. commercial average of $1.06 per therm. Residential customers paid $2.28 and industrial customers $0.56 per therm in the same month, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

How the units convert
Quotes arrive in three different units. Florida gas utilities bill in therms and Pool Managers quote in therms, while the EIA publishes in Mcf. One Mcf is 10 Ccf or 1,000 cubic feet, about 10.37 therms. One Ccf is 100 cubic feet, roughly 1.037 therms. One therm is 100,000 Btu.
Three caveats before you compare a quote to these. Florida is slower to report than most states. January through May 2026 were all unavailable at the latest EIA release, so December 2025 is the most recent actual figure. The residential figure runs high because Florida households burn very little gas, so fixed customer charges spread across few units; it is not a fair read on the cost of gas. And Ccf to Mcf is exact volume while the therm conversion depends on heat content, so your bill will land near these numbers rather than precisely on them.

Florida commercial gas is steadier than most states and it sits high. Over the last thirteen reported months the commercial average ran from $10.67 to $13.40 per Mcf, and the six-year view shows a market that peaked in 2022 and has held roughly flat since.

What this means for you. Commercial gas averaged $12.05/Mcf across 2025, all but flat against $12.00 in 2024 and down from the $14.40 peak in 2022. Florida does not swing the way the plains states do, so the argument for shopping here is less about dodging a spike and more about the 18.0 percent premium to the national average sitting in your bill every month.
The official figure covers less than a third of the market, and that is the point. The EIA's Florida commercial price reflected about 31.6 percent of commercial deliveries in December 2025, the lowest coverage of any state we track. The reason is that most Florida commercial gas already moves through Pool Managers whose contract prices the EIA never sees. The gap is evidence the market is genuinely competitive, not evidence the data is bad.

How Switching Gas Suppliers Works in Florida
Florida does not make you wait for an annual deadline. Under Rule 25-7.0335, Florida Administrative Code, every investor-owned gas utility has to make natural gas transportation service available to non-residential customers, and you can move onto it in any month, effective the first of the month, provided the paperwork is filed by the tenth business day before. Miss a month and you simply start the next one.
You buy from a Pool Manager, not from a retailer. A Pool Manager aggregates many customers into one delivery pool, buys gas for the pool and nominates it into your utility's system. Your utility redelivers it to your meter and keeps charging you regulated delivery rates. Nothing physical changes and no one visits the property.

Doing nothing is a real option here, and it has a cost you can measure. If you never sign a Letter of Authorization you stay on the utility's regulated Purchased Gas Adjustment rate, which is a pass-through of what the utility paid for gas, reviewed by the Florida Public Service Commission. That is a fair benchmark rather than a penalty. It is also fully exposed to the market every month, and it is the number every Pool Manager quote should be measured against.

Peoples Gas System is the largest gas utility in the state and runs its transportation program as Natural Choice Transportation Service under Rider NCTS. Eighteen Pool Managers were qualified on that program at the last count on the FPSC docket. Peoples publishes the current roster; it changes, so work from the live list rather than any page's copy of it.
There is no volume threshold on Peoples Gas. Any non-residential firm-service account can move to a Pool Manager, from a single-location restaurant upward. That is unusually open. Most states gate commercial gas choice behind an annual therm minimum, and Florida does not.

Florida barely heats, so gas spend here is driven by hot water, cooking and process load rather than winter. That changes who benefits: a hotel laundry, a restaurant kitchen or a food processor runs the same therms in August as in January, and a 18.0 percent premium to the national average compounds across all twelve months.

Can Your Florida Business Shop for Natural Gas?
Almost certainly yes, if an investor-owned utility delivers your gas. Rule 25-7.0335, Florida Administrative Code obliges every one of them to make natural gas transportation service available to non-residential customers, and Peoples Gas applies no minimum volume at all.
You can shop if
- Any non-residential firm-service customer of Peoples Gas, with no minimum volume threshold
- Residential accounts on Peoples Gas using at least 2,000 therms a year
- Business and industrial accounts of Florida Public Utilities, Central Florida Gas and Florida City Gas
You cannot shop if
- Interruptible-service customers, since these programs cover firm service
- Municipal gas utility customers, including city-run systems such as Lakeland and Clearwater
- Most residential accounts, which fall under the 2,000 therm threshold

Differences between what the pool nominated and what it actually burned are settled as imbalances. You deal with the Pool Manager on price and term; your utility handles everything physical.
Is there a deadline to switch gas suppliers in Florida?
No annual deadline. You can move in any month, effective the first of the month, provided the paperwork is filed by the tenth business day before. That is unusual: many states run a single short window once a year. In Florida the practical constraint is just the tenth business day of the prior month.
What happens if I do nothing?

Will my gas be shut off or my meter changed?
No. Nothing physical changes. The same gas moves through the same pipe to the same meter, and Peoples Gas System still answers leaks and emergencies at 877-832-6747. Transportation service is an accounting change in who sells you the commodity.
Will I get one bill or two?
It depends on the Pool Manager. Your utility keeps billing you for delivery either way, but some Pool Managers invoice the commodity separately rather than passing it through the utility bill. Ask before you sign, because two invoices means two payment processes for your bookkeeper.
Which Florida utilities offer transportation service?
